Robotic-Assisted and Computer Navigated Hip and Knee Replacement

Robotic-Assisted Hip and Knee Replacement in Dallas and Frisco

A joint replacement works best when the implants sit in the right position for your body. Dr. Brad Waddell uses robotic assistance and computer navigation to plan and place hip and knee implants with a high degree of accuracy. He speaks around the country and internationally on the use of this technology.

What is robotic-assisted joint replacement?

Robotic-assisted surgery uses technology to guide the surgeon in placing total hip and total knee components in the proper position. The robot does not operate on its own. Dr. Waddell performs every step of the surgery, and the system gives him real-time measurements that the eye alone cannot provide.

When a hip or knee implant is placed in the appropriate position, the parts are more likely to function well and last longer.

How it works?

Dr. Waddell uses the latest robotic and AI technology for his hip, partial knee and total knee replacements.

  1. Mapping. During surgery, the system builds a three-dimensional model of your joint. [No pre-operative CT scan is needed for knee cases.]

  2. Planning. Dr. Waddell sets the implant size, position, and alignment for your anatomy before any bone is prepared. Artificial Intelligence is utilized to aid in the process and allows Dr. Waddell to test the components in their position for activities of daily living.

  3. Precision. The robotic tools help him prepare the bone exactly to that plan and offer real time insight into impingement and activities of daily living.

  4. Confirmation. The system verifies implant position before the procedure is finished.

What it means for you:

  • A plan built for your anatomy. No two hips or knees are the same, and the plan reflects yours.

  • Accurate implant position. Correct positioning has been shown to improve function and the life expectancy of the implant.

  • Smaller incisions. Navigation allows Dr. Waddell to work through smaller incisions.

  • Less pain after surgery. Navigated surgery has been shown to reduce pain after surgery.

  •

Robotic assistance is paired with Dr. Waddell's muscle-sparing techniques, including the anterior approach to the hip.

Who is a candidate?

Most patients having a hip or knee replacement are candidates for robotic assistance or navigation. It is especially valuable for younger, active patients, who ask more of their implants and need them to last longer.

Recovery

Recovery follows the same path as any modern, muscle-sparing joint replacement. You walk with a physical therapist on the day of surgery, and most patients use a walker, crutches, or a cane for the first two weeks. [Many patients go home the same day.] Most patients return to driving at about 2 to 3 weeks. See the road to recovery for details.

Frequently asked questions

-Does the robot perform my surgery? No. Dr. Waddell performs the surgery. The system is a tool that gives him precise measurements and guidance.

-Does robotic surgery take longer? No, in fact, the surgeries are more efficient as there is less guess work and re-testing.

-Will my recovery be different? Your recovery plan is the same. Accurate placement and smaller incisions are intended to make it smoother.

-Am I too young for joint replacement? Implants now last much longer than previously thought, and accurate placement is one of the reasons. Dr. Waddell will discuss timing based on your symptoms and goals.
